The public space of contemporary city is not often the result of an urban composition project, but, on the contrary, it is the result of fragmentary urban design; it is often the emblem of unexpressed (complex) needs. All this has led to the dissolution of the ancient relationship of form and scale, the loss of complexity and identity and the reduction of the representativeness of places and spaces. In the urban design of the contemporary city, particular attention must be paid to the "speed" of the public space; it is necessary to create "walking and cycling cities", inclusive and safe cities that put the social needs at the center of urban strategies. The slow mobility, opposing the hyperactive speed of social communications, can contribute to structuring public spaces and enhancing their "social mandate" and becomes, therefore, the new urban connective that imposes new modes of travel, crossing and emotional enjoyment. The road is, above all, a public and social space, and for this reason infrastructures must be considered strategic resources for the inclusive urban project. We have promoted some experiences in this field in some design workshops in Calabria, in Sicily and in a recent experience in the historic centers of Barcelona and Rotterdam and we are developing this topic inside a research on the connectivity of internal areas.
